William Hill named sponsor of Newbury's Super Saturday
William Hill has become the new title sponsor of Newbury Racecourse's Super Saturday fixture, taking naming rights to the UK's most valuable handicap hurdle.
William Hill has been announced as the new sponsor of Super Saturday at Newbury, one of National Hunt racing’s key fixtures, which takes place on 8th February. The deal was confirmed on Thursday 16th January 2025.
As part of the agreement, the bookmaker’s name will be attached to the William Hill Hurdle, the UK’s most valuable handicap hurdle worth £155,000, along with the William Hill Denman Chase and the William Hill Game Spirit Chase.
The move follows William Hill’s earlier sponsorship of the William Hill County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March, a race frequently contested by horses that have run in the Newbury hurdle. Recent crossover results include L’Eau du Sud, who finished second in both races last year, as well as Filey Bay and First Street, who placed in both contests in 2023 and 2022 respectively.
Wider racing portfolio
The Newbury tie-up adds to a growing list of racing sponsorships for William Hill this year, including its return to Cheltenham Festival sponsorship, its role as official betting partner of the Randox Grand National Festival at Aintree, and its sponsorship of the Punchestown Champion Chase.
The operator also became the first bookmaker to introduce ‘Non Runner Money Back’ on this year’s Cheltenham Festival from New Year’s Day, alongside the reinstatement of Best Odds Guaranteed across all UK and Irish racing from 8am daily.
Comment from both parties
Sandro Di Michele, Director of Horse Racing at William Hill, said the sponsorship reflected the company’s ongoing commitment to British racing and to offering value to customers, pointing to the firm’s record on top prices in 2024 and its daily Best Odds Guaranteed offer. He added that the Newbury fixture was significant in the context of Cheltenham Festival preparation, noting the Non Runner Money Back offer available to bettors backing Festival hopefuls.
Jordan Coates, Head of Sales at Newbury Racecourse, said the agreement marked William Hill’s first title sponsorship of a raceday at the course, building on a ten-year relationship that also includes two William Hill betting shops on site. He said the racecourse looked forward to promoting the fixture jointly with the bookmaker in the coming weeks.
